General Guidelines

The Southeast Review wants your poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and cover art. Please see below for genre specific guidelines.

  1. SER accepts submissions year-round, though please note that the response time is slower during the summer months.
  2. During the academic year, we try to respond within 2-4 months. If, after four months, you have not heard back regarding your submission, you may query the editors at southeastreview@gmail.com.
  3. All submissions must be typed and accompanied by a postage-paid envelope. An SASE is required for any kind of response, even if you do not wish to have your materials returned.
  4. You may include a very brief (less than one page) cover letter.
  5. We do not accept faxed or emailed submissions.
  6. SER accepts simultaneous submissions, but we request that you inform us immediately if a piece has been accepted elsewhere.
  7. SER does not publish work that has been previously published elsewhere. We acquire First North American serial rights, and payment is two contributor’s copies. Publication is copyrighted.
  8. Please see our Contests page for information about The World’s Best Short Short Story Contest and The Southeast Review Poetry Contest.

Genre Guidelines

Poetry
Send 3-5 poems with your name and contact information included on each page.  Please provide a self-addressed, stamped envelope for our reply only. Please retain a copy of your work, as we do not return manuscripts; all submissions will be recycled. Also, please send only one submission per reading period for a total of two per year.

Click the following link for more information on SER's poetry section: "Presenting the Poetry Staff, or, Suggestions for Slipping from the Slush Pile into our Pages"

Fiction
Send one story of up to 7500 words. Please put your name and contact information on the story. In recent years we have rarely published short-shorts not submitted through our World's Best Short Short Story Contest. SER does not publish novellas or novel excerpts. Click here to see what our fiction editors look for in a submission.

Nonfiction
Send an essay, memoir or creative nonfiction piece of up to 7500 words. Please put your name and contact information on the work. SER does not publish academic prose. Click the following link for more information on SER's creative nonfiction section: nonfiction editor's proclivities.

Book Review

Send current, single-book reviews of 800-1,000 words. SER publishes reviews of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and prefers to review books by emerging writers and smaller presses. Please query the Review Editor concerning further book review submission instructions.

Cover Art
SER is always looking for crisp, innovative, original black and white photography for our covers, especially work that represents the southeastern region of the United States. Please query the editors before sending us a sample of your work.

Address all submissions to the appropriate section editor at:

Send correspondence concerning fiction to Forrest Anderson, poetry to Rebecca Hazelton, nonfiction to Sami Levy, and book reviews to Thomas Cooper. All other questions or comments should be addressed to the editors, Michael Garriga and Jessica Pitchford.
